When fashion models hit the gym, they want to gain definition – not bulk. “They can’t have Terminator arms,” says New York City trainer Oscar Smith, who has worked with Petra Nemcova and Selita Ebanks. To help them get long and strong, Smith has his clients mix up light weight training (just 3 lbs.!), core and leg work on the mat as well as plenty of cardio intervals. The results? “Lean, but never unhealthy.”

This personal trainer (and NYC cop) lays down the law on better fitness:
Oscar’s Top Three Tips
1) Eat like you train. “If you’re not dieting, you’re never going to get lean,” says Smith. Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand,” so don’t think that hard workouts alone will make up for pizza binges on the weekend.
2) Mix up your routine. “If you’re running a mile every day, after about three weeks that mile is going to feel as if you’re just walking to the fridge. Jump some rope, bike, etc.”
3) Do your sets in waves. “Go light on one set, then heavy, then light, and heavy again to build strength and avoid a plateau.”
Credentials
With almost 20 years of experience, Smith has successfully trained clients with every type of fitness goal-so he knows what works and what doesn’t. In addition to running his own Manhattan-based facility, O-Diesel Studio (odiesel.com), Smith is also a rescue diver with the New York City Police Department, a position requiring such extreme fitness that only a handful of New York’s roughly 39,000 cops have obtained it.

Summer is ‘ere so I attempted the bikini shop. That alone should explain why I then enlisted a personal trainer for a one off session at my gym.
She told me I was skinny fat. She said that I eat shit, ain’t toned, have some buns on me and am lucky enough that my metabolism keeps me around a size 8 but as soon as I hit 25, I’m f*#cked. And fat. Excuse my French.
She gave me a excersize/eating plan, but yeah I am yet to start it and I saw her two weeks ago. So how pleased was I today when flicking through Grazia and stumbled on a small article about the personal trainer, Oscar Smith, who has started working with model Catherine McNeil. He called her Skinny fat too, “She was what I call ’skinny fat’, without muscle and lacking definition”.
If it was good enough for McNeil in previous catwalk seasons then its good enough for me.

Just in Time for the Holidays…Oscar Smith Goes GQ!
Hey There!
As we head into the holidays, working out sadly becomes more and more of a challenge; that said, we decided to check in on our “newest friend in fitness,” Celeb Trainer Oscar Smith of O-Diesel fame. While we had an AMAZING workout (yet again) receiving new and improved ways to rev up our metabolism, nothing was as earth shattering as the recent TIPS Oscar gave the men of the world in the January 2009 issue of GQ.

Like no one else, Oscar Smith knows what supermodels need. As a trainer to some of the top girls in the business, it’s his job to tend to the models’ bodies—even if it sometimes means showing up at their apartments to drag them to the gym. A former gymnast (he trained for the 1988 Olympics but had to bow out due to a knee injury), the 43-year-old works out of an exclusive 1,500-square-foot gym in the luxe condo building One York. Though his clients also include Tom Brady (“in the off season”), David Blaine (“for his stunts”), Amanda Bynes and Ed Burns, it’s those long-legged, tiny torsoed living clothes hangers he specializes in. We checked in with Smith right as Fashion Week kicked off.
